HOWO 6X4 & 8X4 Trucks in African Mining: Why They Dominate the Industry
The Mining Industry’s Favourite Trucks — And Why
Walk into any open-pit mine in Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Zambia or Mozambique, and you’ll see them everywhere: HOWO 6X4 and 8X4 trucks, painted in the dust of a thousand loads, still running strong after years of punishing work. These Chinese-built workhorses have quietly become the dominant truck platform in African mining, and for very good reasons.
At Shandong TK, we’ve built and delivered hundreds of mining-spec HOWO trucks across the continent. This article explains why the 6X4 and 8X4 configurations dominate, how they’re used on-site and what makes them the smartest investment for mining operators.
Why HOWO? The Mining Operator’s Perspective
1. Unbeatable Total Cost of Ownership
In mining, the truck that makes you money isn’t the one with the most features — it’s the one that moves the most material for the lowest cost per tonne. A new HOWO 6X4 dump truck costs $30,000–$40,000 USD — roughly one-third the price of a comparable European model. Over a 5-year mine life, that price difference translates into hundreds of thousands of dollars saved per truck. For a fleet of 20 trucks, the savings fund an entire additional fleet.
2. Proven Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The Sinotruk WD615 and WD12 engines were designed for Chinese infrastructure projects — building highways through mountains, dams in remote valleys, cities from scratch. That DNA makes them perfectly suited to African mining: extreme heat, fine dust, uneven terrain and relentless 24-hour operating cycles. These engines run for 500,000+ km with basic maintenance.
3. Spare Parts Everywhere
This is the decisive advantage. In Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, Lubumbashi, Accra and Lagos, HOWO spare parts are available in every truck parts market — often same-day. No waiting 6 weeks for a part to ship from Europe. No $2,000 bill for a component that costs $200 in the HOWO ecosystem. Downtime kills mining profitability, and HOWO minimises downtime.
4. Simple, Repairable Engineering
HOWO trucks use straightforward mechanical systems that any trained heavy vehicle mechanic can service and repair. No complex electronics, no proprietary diagnostic tools, no factory-only software. In remote mining locations where your nearest official dealer might be 500 km away, this simplicity is worth its weight in gold — literally.
The 6X4 Configuration — The Mining Workhorse
The 6×4 (3 axles, 10 wheels, rear-wheel drive) is the most popular mining truck configuration in Africa. Here’s why:
As a Dump Truck (Tipper)
The HOWO 6X4 dump truck carries 18–20 cubic metres per load with a GVW of 25 tonnes. In a typical mining cycle (load, haul 2 km, dump, return), it completes 25–35 cycles per shift. That’s up to 700 cubic metres of material moved per truck, per shift.
At Shandong TK, we build mining-spec dump trucks with:
- Reinforced U-shaped bucket — thicker floor plate (10mm) and side walls (8mm) for abrasive rock
- Heated floor option — prevents sticky clay from adhering to the bucket
- Heavy-duty hydraulic system — faster tipping cycles (under 15 seconds)
- Rock guard canopy — protects the cabin from falling debris during excavator loading
- Upgraded suspension — heavy-duty leaf springs rated for continuous overload

As a Tractor Unit (with Tipping Semi-Trailer)
For mines where the dump point is further from the pit (5–20 km), operators use HOWO 6X4 tractors pulling tipping semi-trailers. This combination carries 35–45 cubic metres per trip — nearly double a rigid dump truck. The tractor can unhook, swap trailers and keep moving while each trailer is being loaded or unloaded.

Multi-Purpose Flexibility
The beauty of the 6X4 platform is its versatility. The same chassis that hauls ore today can pull a flatbed trailer carrying equipment tomorrow. In the rainy season, when mining slows, 6X4 tractors work on highway projects. When the mine expands, they haul construction materials for new facilities. One truck, many jobs.
The 8X4 Configuration — Maximum Payload
The 8×4 (4 axles, 12 wheels) is the heavy hitter. With a GVW of 31 tonnes and bucket capacities of 25–30 cubic metres, it’s the largest on-road dump truck available without requiring special permits.
Where 8X4 Excels
- Large open-pit mines — where maximum tonnage per trip reduces fleet size and fuel consumption
- Aggregate and sand quarries — where lightweight material allows maximum bucket volume
- Overburden removal — stripping topsoil and waste rock to expose the ore body
- Dam construction — hauling massive volumes of earth and rock fill
The 420HP Advantage
Our HOWO 8X4 420HP uses the WD12 engine — a step up from the WD615. The extra power matters on mine ramps with 8–12% gradients, where a fully loaded 31-tonne truck needs every horsepower to climb safely. The 12-speed HW19712 gearbox provides precise gear selection for both uphill loaded runs and downhill empty returns.
Why Not Go Bigger?
Mining companies sometimes ask about off-highway trucks (the enormous yellow Caterpillar/Komatsu units). The answer is cost: a single off-highway mining truck costs $500,000–$2,000,000 USD, burns 50+ litres of fuel per hour and requires specialised maintenance. For small to medium mines producing under 5 million tonnes per year, a fleet of 10 HOWO 8X4 trucks does the same job at a fraction of the investment.
Real-World Mining Applications
Gold Mining — Tanzania & Ghana
Artisanal and small-scale gold mines use HOWO 6X4 dump trucks to haul ore from the pit to the processing area. Typical distances: 1–5 km. Volume: 15–20 loads per shift. The trucks operate on unpaved roads with steep gradients and sharp turns — exactly the conditions where HOWO’s robust suspension and powerful drivetrain excel.
Copper & Cobalt Mining — DRC & Zambia
The Copperbelt region relies heavily on HOWO 6X4 and 8X4 tippers for both open-pit mining and waste rock disposal. Fleet sizes range from 10 to 100+ trucks per mine. The proximity of Dar es Salaam port (HOWO’s main East African entry point) ensures rapid spare parts supply.
Aggregate & Construction Materials — Nigeria & Kenya
Quarries and aggregate plants use HOWO dump trucks for daily production: blasted rock → crusher → stockpile → customer delivery. The 6X4 is preferred for on-site haulage; the tractor + tipping trailer combination handles customer deliveries over longer distances.
Diamond Mining — Angola & Sierra Leone
Alluvial diamond mining requires moving large volumes of overburden to access gravel beds. HOWO 8X4 dump trucks remove waste material efficiently, while 6X4 models handle the more delicate ore-bearing gravel transport to the processing plant.
New, Reconditioned or Custom-Built — Your Choice
New from Factory
We purchase HOWO trucks directly from the Sinotruk production line — no middlemen, no markups. New trucks come with full manufacturer warranty and zero-km odometers. Ideal for long-term mining projects and operators who need guaranteed reliability from day one.
Reconditioned at Our Workshop
For budget-conscious operators, we fully recondition used HOWO trucks in our Liangshan workshop. Engine overhaul, new hydraulic system, fresh bucket fabrication, complete repaint. You get 80–90% of new truck performance at 40–60% of the price. Many mining companies start with reconditioned fleets and upgrade to new trucks as production revenue grows.
